Samsonov is out, three Germans in semifinals
European table tennis icons met in the first quarterfinals of men┤s singles - 2003 World Champion, Werner Schlager and the 1993 vice world champion and European champion from 1994, Jean-Michel Saive.

Schlager, who lost just opening set was much stronger this time. Although the Austrian stresses that he is not required form this year as he had great trouble with the opening of table tennis academy bearing his name, he still keeps his technical finesse and rhythm.

In the second quarterfinal, victory of the triple European champion Vladimir Samsonov was expected in the match with German Patrick Baum. The 34-year-old player from Belorussia easily won the first set and led 5-1 in the second. Then, in turn, Baum started to play with self confidence and his left-hand started to fire at the opponent's half from the backhand and forehand at a time.

Germans celebrating the successful day

Junior champion from 2005 Baum was also more active in decisive set, he led 5:3 on the turn, 8:5 later, and when he scored 9:6, the Samson did not seem OK. And it turned out better for the 23-years-old player of Borussia Duesseldorf, as he gave  a quick mat to Belarusian and winning the set 11:7. So, the expected battle of Samsonov with Boll will not happen in Ostrava.

The next semi-finalist is the 11x European Champion, Timo Boll. The German best player completely smashed the 22-year-old Frenchman Adrien Mattenet. Boll´s compatriot, Christian Suss completed the semifinal pair, who easily beat Romanian Adrian Crisan 4:1. Three Germans in the semifinals of men´s singles at European championship last appeared in Courmayeur, Italy in 2003 (Wosik, Rosskopf and Boll). After seven years in Ostrava this situation repeats.
